This is the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. It is a humanitarian and educational nonprofit organization for volunteers from age 12 to 90. The cadet program offers young people ages 12 to 21 the chance to learn about aviation and space, as well as develop leadership and technical skills. Cadets progress through a structured sequence of training in physical fitness, aviation, survival training, radio communications, model rocketry, first aid and CPR, search and rescue, disaster relief, public speaking, and leadership. Annual membership is $34 and includes aerospace and leadership study material and the majority of two uniforms - dress blues and BDU's. Weekly meetings are Monday evenings, from 6 to 8:30 pm, at the Benton Harbor airport. Additional activities may include: survival camping, orientation flights, crowd control for fly-ins, training missions, and encampment. (To see a slideshow presentation of this year's encampment, visit the website: http://encampment.miwg.cap.gov/.) There is a carpool in the Buchanan/Niles area, and potential ones at two other locations. Prospective members are encouraged to visit a few meetings before joining.
