Mel Scult opens new Yad Mordecai Adult Education course

Date:Thursday November 12, 2009
Time:7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Type:Appointment  (Public)
Most Reconstructionists, according to our own Mel Scult, beginning with Mordecai Kaplan, do not believe in a supernatural being that watches over us, rewards and punishes us or hears our prayers. Consequently, no surprise, many are confused about what prayer can mean in their lives. Mel will explore this very dilemma in his talk on Thursday, November 12th. It is tantalizingly titled "How do you Pray When No One is Listening - An Exploration of Reconstructionist Prayer." It begins YMAE’s new course From Theology to Liturgy.

Mel will offer a second lecture entitled The Kaplan Prayerbook on December 12th following the Shabbat service and kiddush luncheon. This talk will highlight the liturgical changes in Kaplan’s 1945 Prayerbook. The course will continue in January as a joint project of YMAE and the Ritual Committee. In a monthly series of divrei tefillah, brief discussions during Shabbat morning service, Rabbi Yael will look at elements of the service that are new in the Prayerbook we currently use, Kol HaNeshamah, the creation of the Reconstructionist Prayerbook Commission.

This program has a unique combination of “classroom” and “lab exercises” with an opportunity to hear from the experts, but also to contribute your own thoughts and feelings. Hope to see you on November 12th, note that the time is 7pm.
